“Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:16
How is your prayer life? If God said, “Yes” to all the prayers you prayed today, what would you have? Most of us don’t live with godly expectation because we don’t pray until there’s a problem. While the Lord invites us to come to Him with our needs, prayer is more than a crisis hotline.
Prayer should be a regular part of a believer’s life. Jesus said, “But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father…” (Matthew 6:6). Of course, we can pray anytime, anywhere. But God also expects us to set aside time to talk with Him in private. Jesus not only taught about private prayer, He modeled what it looks like.
Jesus spent a great deal of time in prayer. Yes, He prayed publicly throughout the Gospels, “But Jesus Himself would often slip away to the wilderness and pray” (Luke 5:16). One of those days, “He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God” (Luke 6:12). As His followers, we should have the same gravitational pull to prayer that Jesus had.
God desires a time of personal fellowship with each of His children. In these moments, He communicates with us through His Word and His Spirit. That’s why your walk with the Lord will never surpass your talk with the Lord. Praying, with no other agenda than to meet with God, grows our faith. It sustains us in times of crisis. In fact, God may even allow a crisis just so we’ll draw nearer to Him in prayer. That’s how important it is.
So, how is your prayer life? Is it just a series of 911 calls to God when there’s a crisis? Turning to Him in need is a great starting point. Just remember, the Lord also wants to spend time with you in fellowship. He promises to supply the grace you need exactly when you need it, not just in an emergency but in every moment. You have a personal invitation to spend time with the heavenly Father, the Creator of the Universe. And He’s not just inviting you…He’s expecting you.
