“Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart” 1 Peter 1:22

Loving one another is foundational to Christianity. The fact that this command is repeated so often in Scripture reveals two things: it’s deeply important to God and it doesn’t come naturally to us. Notice that the Bible doesn’t say, “Love those who look like you” or “Love those whose personalities you enjoy.”  The command to “love one another” means we are to love every believer. How is that possible?

To start with, we’re part of the same spiritual family. This bond isn’t based on shared interests, personalities, or preferences but on the fact that we’ve been born into God’s family through Christ. We can all identify with genuinely loving a family member we don’t necessarily like all the time. Sincere love isn’t superficial or pretentious. It’s honest, intentional, and pure. How do we cultivate this kind of love? Through obedience. Genuine love flows from hearts that are aligned with the truth of God’s Word.

Our obedience to God also leads to loving one another fervently and wholeheartedly. This isn’t a shallow feeling but a deep commitment to seeking the best for others. Fervent love is unselfish, unconditional, and sacrificial. It pushes past convenience, stepping in to meet others’ needs, even when it costs us something—time, resources, or emotional energy.

None of this comes naturally. But the good news is that it doesn’t have to because it’s empowered by the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:5 reminds us, “the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.” While sincere and fervent love aren’t part of human nature, they are in God’s nature. His love enables us to love others as He does. And the more obedient we are to Him, the more naturally it comes.

What does this kind of love look like in daily life? It means extending grace when someone’s personality rubs you the wrong way. It’s looking for ways to meet the needs of others, even when it’s not convenient. Love prays often and forgives quickly. Loving one another this way isn’t always easy, but it reveals a life transformed by God. As you grow in obedience to His Word, your ability to love every believer sincerely and fervently will grow as well. How will you demonstrate God’s love today?
