“And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.” Matthew 7:25

The storms of life often come without warning. These are situations that disturb us physically, financially, or emotionally. And because storms vary in type and intensity, they test our faith in different ways. Sometimes, in the middle of a strong storm, we might even wonder if we’ll make it through. But just because your faith is struggling doesn’t mean it will crash. So, how can you know for sure that you’ll still be standing after the storm?

First, realize that storms are inevitable. You’re either in one right now, coming out of one, or about to enter one. Troubles don’t vanish just because you’re a Christian. In fact, they might actually increase. Jesus said, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22). He knew we’d experience the hardships of living in a fallen world, plus the adversity of living out our faith.

Storms also test whether you really believe what you say you believe. The Bible speaks of those who claim faith but don’t cling to it. For example, Peter and Judas faced the same storm—the arrest and death of Jesus—but the results were entirely different. Both men stumbled, either denying or betraying Jesus. While Peter trusted Jesus enough to recover, Judas’ foundation was revealed as false faith. One storm—two results.

Stumbling faith doesn’t have to be crashing faith. Genuine faith in Jesus Christ eventually weathers the storm. That’s why you need to check your foundation; because storms test your faith and reveal what kind of foundation you have. If your faith is built on peace and prosperity, you’ll be overcome when a strong storm hits.

What is your present storm revealing about your faith? Are you stumbling and struggling? That’s okay. Remember, faith that cannot be tested cannot be trusted. God already knows every difficulty you will ever face. Your current circumstances haven’t caught Him off guard. Are you trusting Christ as your firm foundation? Then cling to Him in the midst of the storm, and you’ll still be standing after the storm passes by.
