“are you not walking like mere men?” 1 Corinthians 3:3
The Bible teaches that every believer can live a supernatural life. Yet, we often go about our day like ordinary human beings. In other words, we try to live out our faith by what we can see, feel, and rationalize with our finite intellect. We mix the things of God with things of the world. This hybrid holiness results in things like spiritual immaturity, jealousy, and strife (1 Corinthians 2:14-3:3). So, how do we live the supernatural life?
First, this life is only possible through the Holy Spirit. The nature of Christ exists in every believer. The Bible beautifully describes us as being, “partakers of the divine nature” (2 Peter 1:4). Still, we must choose daily to die to our old nature and live in our new nature—the divine nature—by yielding to the Spirit as He directs and guides.
The supernatural life also requires understanding God’s Word, which reveals His will and His ways. If you struggle, remember that you have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:10-16). Scripture was inspired by the Holy Spirit—the same Spirit that lives within you. The one who wrote the Bible wants to help you understand it. Together, the Holy Spirit and the Word of God lift our thoughts, attitudes, and actions above what’s natural to human nature.
If you find yourself thinking, “I’m only human,” then you’re thinking like mere men. Don’t be ordinary when God has called you to be extraordinary! Adrian Rogers said, “We ought to be supernaturally natural, and naturally supernatural. In all spiritual things, we ought to be natural, and in all natural things we ought to be spiritual.” Does that describe you? Are you living a supernatural life? If not, why not?
